Have you claimed your Facebook username?

Check out this ad from Volkswagen that began airing just days after the ability to create Facebook usernames was released – at the end of the commercial they use their Facebook page URL instead of a link to their website, bringing in new audiences to their Facebook page where they will be able to connect with them regularly on a personal level.

A great way to refer people to either your personal Facebook profile or your business’s Facebook page is to give someone the URL and tell them to either “friend” or “fan” you.  But those URLs are so long!  That’s why Facebook implemented usernames. You can claim your personal username as soon as you set up your profile; for pages you must have at least 25 fans to claim your username.

This is a simple step that makes networking on Facebook that much simpler.  Add a quick link to your profile in your email signature, or use your new page URL on marketing materials!  All you have to do is go to http://facebook.com/username to claim both your personal and page usernames.  Just make sure you choose carefully – once you’ve chosen your username, you cannot change it, so stick to the basics like your first and last name or the name of your company.
